The foremost spine of the dorsal fin is located on the head and is modified into a “fishing rod” tipped with a fleshy “bait.” The deep sea anglerfish, also known as the humpback anglerfish, is a medium sized (7 inches/18 cm) anglerfish that lives in the bathypelagic zone of the open ocean. Living at depths of at least 6600 feet (2000 m), this species lives its life in the complete absence of sunlight. The anglerfish is a bony fish that got its name because of its specific method of predation. The fleshy growth that comes out of its head has the function of a lure that the anglerfish uses to catch other fish. These fish can be found all over the world, most of the time dwelling near the seafloor.

At these depths, water pressure is extremely high, enough to kill any surface or shallow water fish instantly. Scientists can only observe the animal with deep sea submarines in its natural habitat, making it very hard to study. Angler fish are not picky. There is very little life at the bottom of the ocean where they live.
