Daphnia is one of the several small aquatic crustaceans commonly called water fleas because of their jerky swimming movements. The most prominent external features of Daphnia are a single large compound eye and two pairs of slightly branched antennae. Cladocera are commonly referred to as water fleas due to the hopping motion they make when moving about in the water. Daphnia are distributed throughout much of the world, though they are less abundant in the tropics where water bodies are usually nutrient poor (only six of the 50 daphnia species occur in the tropics). Daphnia are freshwater creatures that can be kept in a tank as small as 5 or 6 gallons and all the way up to 360 gallons! The main thing to look for in a tank is a greater surface area than depth. That helps mimic their natural environment of ponds and other freshwater habitats.
