Born in Gothenburg on 12th December 1887, died in Stockholm on 15th February 1974. In 1910-1911 he studied at the Stockholm Conservatory, attending Andreas Hallén's composition and instrumentation classes. As a composer, however, Atterberg was really self-taught. He also had an extensive technical education behind him. In 1910-1911 he studied at the Stockholm Conservatory, attending Andreas Hallén's composition and instrumentation classes. As a composer, however, Atterberg was really self-taught. He also had an extensive technical education behind him. His works remained fairly folkloristic, especially his operas and ballets.
For many years, the only Atterberg work that circulated widely outside Sweden in performance, recording, and notoriety was his Symphony No. 6, which in 1928 won a prize from the Columbia Graphophone Company in celebration of the Schubert centenary. The Three Nocturnes are orchestral movements which Atterberg extracted from Fanal (The Beacon), his highly praised third opera, which received thirty performances between its premiere in 1934 and 1957 and is nowadays his most appreciated stage work. Other jobs taken on by Atterberg included his work as a music critic for the Stockholms Tidningen from 1919 to 1957, and as secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music from 1940 to 1953.
